From the Codex Enexia, information extracted from the collected works of famed explorer and naturalist, Cal Dunathin.
Type: Subterranean Serpent
Habitat: Underground Plains and Deserts
Description:
The Sandmaw is a gargantuan subterranean serpent, feared and respected by those who traverse the deserts and plains. With their formidable hooked jaws made of tough keratin and distinctive triad of glowing eye slits on either side of their head, they are one of the most awe-inspiring creatures of the underground.
Anatomy and Appearance:
These massive serpents are covered in rough, granular scales that aid in their burrowing endeavors. Their powerful jaws are not only a tool for hunting but also for navigating through the dense underground terrain. The eerie glow from their eye slits serves as a beacon in the pitch-black depths where they dwell.
Diet:
Sandmaws hunt by sensing vibrations in the ground, allowing them to detect and ambush prey from below. Their diet consists of large subterranean creatures, and they are known to occasionally breach the surface to drag down unsuspecting victims.
Behavior and Interaction with Technology:
Notoriously temperamental, Sandmaws are especially enraged by the presence of radsessence-infused objects or elaric engines. It is speculated that the vibrations or emissions from such technologies disrupt the Sandmaws' sensitive navigation and hunting mechanisms, provoking aggressive reactions.
Ecosystem Impact:
As apex predators of the underground, Sandmaws play a critical role in controlling the population of subterranean fauna. Their tunneling activities also contribute to soil aeration and the redistribution of nutrients.
Cultural Significance:
Among the desert-dwelling communities, Sandmaws are often regarded with a mixture of terror and wonder. They are featured in many local myths and tales, usually as guardians of ancient secrets.
